Hot Flash!

Hey there!

So, yeah, I’m literally having a hot flash. I had to remove my shirt to allow some cool air to fan away the rush of heat that ran through my upper torso and neck. Phew!

I am in that stage of life.

My body outgrew every last semblance of its youth. My uterus, once alive and ripe with fertile eggs, has shrunk, shedding with it possibility for new life.

Many women complain about this— the moods, the hormones, the raging hot flashes, the lack of sleep. Us women always got something to bitch about, am I right? (Gasp! She said “bitch” on her website! Lol. No offense, of course.) We aren’t wrong. Since adolescence, we have dealt with growing pains, menstrual cramps, periods. Hormones, mood swings, and bloating, oh my! You sit there, reading this, thinking no, I’m a delight 24/7 to everyone and everything. Uh huh.

Okay, I’m not saying that we don’t have the right to be bitchy. Being female has wreaked havoc upon our mental and physical health. For years. What I am saying is that it’s easy to forget what it’s all about.

Creation.

Our vessels were designed to create human life. There’s a price to pay for this privilege. Childbirth. Then in our forties and fifties, we graduate from that stage, allowing our bodies to seek a new homeostasis. Next, we’re hurled into this new phase of life. What is a woman to do other than pull her already falling hair out?

I choose to think we are like caterpillars, bursting from our cocoons. Once that process is complete, we emerge into this new, elegant version of ourselves.

My bestie, who is the most inspiring person I know, tells me how she is grateful just to wake up in the morning. The first thought in my head is how I’d like to go back to sleep. Or my busy mind begins its marathon of things I have to do. Unfortunately, gratitude does not accompany those first waking moments. Does this sound like you?

Life is a gift, in its every phase and form. It doesn’t feel like it most of the time, and we tend to forget how much our bodies do for us. Can you imagine not being able to walk? Or cook, or drive, or see or hear…or eat? Sometimes, people in our lives remind us of how these are things we often take for granted. Blessings. And because we live in a world of duality, we have to accept that the bad things show us the good.

There is so much good, if you choose to see it. I do. These hot flashes are a testament to my body’s effort to progress into the next phase of life. And what a privilege it is for me to be in my fifties, alive and well. Many women were not afforded this privilege.

When we give thanks for all the good, feel into all that is right in our lives, the universe will reward us with more of that.

So, here’s a reminder that as bad as things can get, they can always get worse.

Let’s be grateful for waking up today, being able to get that cup of coffee, to feed ourselves, go grocery shopping, cook meals, and all the other things we are able to do. As I remind you of this, I remind myself. Be well, you amazing human, love yourself and your body and all it does for you.
